Public Area

The Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown will incorporate a public access area corresponding to 50% of the total area of the site. Members of the public will be able to enjoy landscaped gardens, with a wide variety of tree and plantlife, as well as an open air amphitheatre. This amphitheatre will be a wonderful place for music programmes and for lectures, with the water acting as a backdrop to the musicians and the speakers. The outdoor public gardens will complement the covered gardens to be found in Building A.

In this public area the vegetation and plantlife have been chosen to provide coherency and harmony with the surrounding area as well as to ensure sustainability. The principal species chosen are: Celtis australis, Fraxinus angustifolia, Jacaranda mimosifolia, Populus alba, Pinus Pinea,Tipuana tipu, Tamarix canariensis, Eleagnus anguatifolia, Arbustus unedo, Crataegus Monogyna, Phillyrea angustifolia, Quercus coccifera, Calluna vulgaris , Juniperus horizontalis, Lavandula spica, Santolina pinnata, Santolina chamaecyparissus and Satureja montana.
