C-TRACER 2 (Portugal)

AIBILI (Association for Innovation and Biomedical Research on Light) was recognised in 2010 as the 2nd C-TRACER by the Champalimaud Foundation for its activities in translational eye research.

AIBILI is a research technology organisation in the health area dedicated to the development and testing of new products for diagnostic imaging and medical therapy.

Founded in 1989, AIBILI is a private non-profit organisation certified by ISO 9001 and focusing on:

  • identification of biomarkers of retinal vascular disease activity
  • characterisation of phenotypes of diabetic retinopathy progression to VTDR 
  • innovation in diagnostics imaging
  • reading centre for fundus imaging
  • clinical pharmacology studies
  • health technology assessment studies
  • planning, coordination, execution and monitoring of clinical research activities (4C)
  • AIBILI is the Coordinating Centre of EVICR.net – European Vision Institute Clinical Research Network that is a network of European Ophthalmological Clinical Research Sites, dedicated to performing clinical research in ophthalmology with 77 Clinical Site Members from 16 European Countries.

    AIBILI is located at the Health Campus of Coimbra University and has its own building with 15.296 sq. feet with state-of-the-art equipment and a permanent staff of 40 including medical doctors, researchers, technicians, trial coordinators and administrative personnel. Another 60 individuals collaborate regularly on a part-time basis involved mainly in research activities.

    The work of AIBILI, and particularly of the Coimbra Coordinating Centre for Clinical Research in the coordination of the EVICR.net were very relevant for the recognition as a C-TRACER.

    C-TRACER 2 (Portugal) collaborates with the other members of the C-TRACER network to develop new avenues of research and participate in symposia and educational initiatives.
