The Champalimaud Clinical Centre (CCC) is a state-of-the-art centre for science, medicine and technology, comprising a clinical facility for both research and treatment of disease. The core mission of the CCC is to offer premier clinical services, supported by advanced programmes of translational research. In this way, the CCC strives to personalise therapy and improve clinical outcomes.
Our team offers a full spectrum of clinical services, including early diagnosis, treatment, counselling and follow-up, as we strive to define new standards of patient care. Cancer care at the CCC is organised into specialised Disease Management Teams – comprising, among others, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, nurses, imaging specialists and psycho-oncologists – which meet regularly to decide on the management of each individual patient.
On arrival at the Centre patients are received by a dedicated assistant, who remains close to the patient before, during and after treatment. When indicated, patients are able to meet with medical experts from different disciplines during just a single visit, thereby having the opportunity to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the available options. Where possible, the option of participating in research and/or clinical trials is made available.
In addition to managing the treatment process, the centre’s world-renowned faculty strives to confront cancer at its root by utilising the latest technology and techniques to offer an advanced programme of early detection and cancer prevention. Common to all Units of the CCC is the access to state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic tools. The Centre offers world-class radiotherapy and systemic therapy facilities as well as advanced nuclear medicine facilities, pathology services (with a focus on personalised medicine), a fully-equipped imaging department and comprehensive support at all stages of the treatment process.
The Champalimaud Clinical Centre offers a unique area for applying chemotherapy. Comprising 32 discreet treatment booths, the Day Hospital strives to eliminate as much of the physical and mental stress from this process as possible. To this end, the CCC offers an unrivalled treatment environment, with patients having the option of receiving treatment outside in the Day Hospital’s beautiful outdoor garden, designed to promote peace, tranquillity and well-being. Inside the Day Hospital, each booth contains a high-quality chair to ensure that patients receive treatment in a state of optimal comfort, with cable television and wireless internet available.
The Radiotherapy Department utilises the most advanced equipment and techniques in the practice of single dose image guided radiotherapy (SD-IGRT). The CCC is one of the few centres worldwide currently with the expertise and equipment necessary to offer this cutting-edge procedure.
The CCC is fully equipped to offer the latest techniques and methods in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the breast, lung, prostate, digestive tract, as well as providing a particular focus on metastasis.
In addition to the advanced programmes of oncologic care, the CCC also offers treatment for neuropsychiatric diseases, supported by focused research programmes carried out by the Champalimaud Neuroscience Programme.
All of the Champalimaud Clinical Centre’s medical staff are contractually obliged to carry out clinical investigation, thereby promoting the Champalimaud Foundation’s vision of ‘translational research’ – linking the laboratory bench to the patient’s bedside and making the most up-to-date treatments available to the patient.
With a unique treatment environment and internationally renowned faculty, the CCC is a leading centre for the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
