State of the art radiotherapy at the Champalimaud Clinical Centre
The very first EDGE radiosurgery system from Varian Medicial Systems due to arrive at the CCC in 2013.
Throughout the early months of this year the Champalimaud Clinical Centre (CCC) has continued to expand and explore the use of new techonology and treatment in the fight against cancer. In particular, the CCC’s partnership with Varian Medical Systems has ensured that its Radiotherapy Department is able to work with the very latest tools in the field of radiation oncology.
In April, the annual ESTRO – European Society for Radiation and Oncology - meeting was held in Geneva and offered a platform to showcase Varian’s latest radiosurgery technologies. Varian’s new EDGE Radiosurgery treatment system is a fully integrated end-to-end solution for planning and delivering treatments using new real-time tumour tracking technology and motion management capabilities.
Later this year the Champalimaud Clinical Centre will take delivery of the first available EDGE platform and will begin treating the first patients with this new technology in the fourth quarter of 2013. Rolf Staehelin, Head of Varian Oncology Systems’ international marketing, used the ESTRO meeting to highlight the CCC’s role in the development and utilisation of this technology.
