Foundation plans cutting-edge research centre

A report from the second meeting of the Council of Trustees of the Champalimaud Foundation, which was held in Lisbon on the 11th January.

The goal of the meeting was the discussion of the operational model of the Foundation, and it gathered for that purpose widely acclaimed personalities such as Mary Robinson, Simone Veil, António Coutinho, António Damásio, amongst others.

One of the highlights of the working session was the announcement by the President, Leonor Beleza, that the Foundation is about to create its own research center in Portugal, whose construction will start in due time.

The Centre, developed around clinical and basic research, will focus on neurosciences and cancer as its priorities, both in basic and clinical research.

In the research field, it was also announced that the Champalimaud Foundation shall have its first research teams working in other centers throughout the world.

António Champalimaud Award

The 1 Million Euro António Champalimaud Award was also announced to distinguish scientific research in the field of vision and correlated areas.

So as to guarantee the social goal of contributing to the well being of the populations, particularly in developing countries, the jury of the Award will include a distinguished panel of scientists, as well as public personalities of recognised merit and influence in these areas.

Trustee elected
The Champalimaud Foundation is proud to count amongst its trustees Aníbal Cavaco Silva, recently elected President of the Portuguese Republic.
