Frequently Asked Questions

What are the productive groups eligible for the award?

The 2010 award will be presented to an active research group involved in basic or clinical research which has led to a major breakthrough in the understanding and/or the preservation of vision. The award may be split between more than one research group/laboratory for their work in a given field, or presented to one particular group for their achievements.

Will the António Champalimaud Vision Award carry any reporting requirements? Will it require any accountability or deliverables from the recipients?

The Champalimaud Foundation will require annually financial reports summarizing the use of the award funds and any publications or reports summarizing the results obtained through use of Award funds. The award recipients will be asked to present their work, initial use of the funds and future plans in a lecture taking place the year following the award.

Can nominations be resubmitted?

Nominations can be resubmitted, and the Foundation may contact candidates or nominators with regard to this. Particular materials such as the activity report (for the award in odd years) or research papers (in even years) may need to be updated.

What is the role of the nominator?

The nominator identifies the candidate and submits the entry to the foundation. The nominator may also additionally be one of the support letter writers.

What can the award sum be used for?

The award may be used in any way that furthers the outstanding contributions of the recipients. This could be furthering basic, translational or clinical research, clinical practice or public health programmes.  In principle the award funds are not to be used in commercial development or marketing stage of products that may be developed by the recipients.

Do the report and supporting letters have to be submitted at the same time as the entry form?

If necessary the report and letters can be submitted after the entry form. In this case candidates/nominators should make clear reference to which entry the submitted documents pertain to. The entry form does not need to be completed again when sending these files but the required fields (name, organization etc) must be filled in.

Does the award cover indirect or overhead costs at institutions potentially hosting the recipients?

Recipients are awarded in recognition of their achievements which could be taking place in diverse institutions and regions of the world. The award is not a conventional grant or fellowship and is to be used exclusively at the discretion of the recipients for their future work, with the understanding and guarantee that no amount will be taken as Tax or Indirect (Overhead) Costs.

How should entries be submitted?

Please be sure to submit both paper and digital copies of all documents and that these match exactly. Paper copies should be sent to the Champalimaud Foundation and digital copies may be sent on CD/USB drive and/or by email.
