Art & Science

The synthesis between art and science often leads to innovation, and the best innovators frequently combine these two fields. In addition to its various funding initiatives, the Champalimaud Foundation engages in art and science programming, providing a framework for understanding the nature of creativity, vision, healing and well-being. The impetus behind this kind of programming is the promotion of critical and imaginative thought – the mainstay of innovation.

Scientific inquiry is not unlike artistic inquiry. Both begin with a question. Artists and scientists influence ways of thinking about and responding to the world, enabling us to reflect upon our lives and to address fundamental questions of value, purpose and meaning in a rigorous and systematic way. The Champalimaud Foundation believes that varying perspectives, brought to bear on a particular health issue or research programme, add dimension and depth to the subject at hand and frequently expedite realisation of applicable findings and solutions.
