The Champalimaud Foundation is seeking outstanding individuals for the positions of medical oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, radiotherapists, imaging specialists (radiologists, interventional radiologists and nuclear medicine specialists), gynecologists and other oncology-related specialties. These positions are located in the recently inaugurated Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown in Lisbon, Portugal.
The Champalimaud Foundation is a private organisation dedicated to making advances in biomedical science, with a specific focus on research into cancer and neuroscience. At the core of the Foundation’s activities is the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, a multidisciplinary centre for translational research of excellence that utilises state-of –the-art facilities for basic and clinical investigation.
The Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, based in the historic riverside area of Belém in Lisbon, includes over 6000m2 of laboratory area, 2000m2 office space, over 7000m2 of clinical oncology facilities and a vivarium. The Champalimaud Foundation’s scientific objectives have been guided by its Scientific Committee comprising: James D. Watson (Chairman), Paul Marks, Alan Ashworth, Maria Blasco, Susumu Tonegawa, Mark Bear, J. Anthony Movshon, Barry Dickson, Martin Raff, Keith Peters and Ronald Blasberg. The Champalimaud Neuroscience Programme is already well established under the leadership of Zachary Mainen and currently comprises 13 research groups.
The objective of the Champalimaud Foundation’s cancer programme is to make breakthroughs in the control and cure of cancer. The Champalimaud Cancer Centre, located in the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, will include fully equipped research laboratories and a clinical outpatient facility for diagnosis and treatment of cancer, including facilities for radiotherapy, systemic treatment (e.g. chemotherapy) and imaging. It will provide ideal conditions for the development of projects of excellence with clinical application, offering state of the art infra-structures and cutting-edge technologies for cancer care, research and teaching.
1. Medical Oncologists: The applicant must hold a MD or a MD, PhD and have board certification in Medical Oncology., as well as a good knowledge of Portuguese. Applicants with particular interest and experience in the areas of breast, gynecologic, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, head & neck and lung cancers are invited to apply.
2. Surgeons: The applicant must hold a MD or a MD, PhD and have board certification in Surgery. Sub-specialisation and experience in one or several areas of oncologic surgery and good knowledge of Portuguese are also required.
3. Pathologists: The applicant must hold a MD or a MD, PhD and have board certification in Pathology with a focus on oncology.
4. Radiotherapists: The applicant must hold a MD or a MD, PhD and have board certification in Radiotherapy. Good knowledge of Portuguese is also required.
5. Imaging Specialists:
a. Radiologists: The applicant must hold a MD or a MD, PhD and have board certification in Radiology with experience in oncologic imaging.
b. Interventional Radiologists: The applicant must hold a MD or a MD, PhD and have board certification in Radiology and sub-specialisation in interventional radiology. The applicant should have expertise in imaging guided biopsies relevant to oncology practice.
c. Nuclear Medicine Specialists: The applicant must hold a MD or a MD, PhD and have board certification in Nuclear medicine with experience in oncology.
6. Gynecologists: The applicant must hold a MD or a MD, PhD and have board certification in Gynecology. Good knowledge of Portuguese is also required. Experience In fertility issues in Oncology, management of menopausal symptoms and gynecological ultrasound are specifically sought.
Applicants must be able conduct clinical practice in Portugal. The Foundation strongly encourages application from individuals who have a desire to dedicate 50% of their time to the clinical practice and the other 50% of the time to basic, translational or clinical science research.
