António Borges
General Council
Originally from Porto, António Borges studied Economics in Lisbon, where he was awarded his degree in 1972. Following this, he continued his studies at the University of Stanford, USA, where he attained a Doctorate in Economics in 1980. His professional career began the same year when he took up a professorship at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France. He has held this post on two separate occasions, firstly between 1980 and 1990, and again between 1993 and 2000. On the latter occasion he was also the Dean of INSEAD. His tenure at INSEAD was interrupted between 1990 and 1993 when he returned to Portugal as Vice Governor of the Bank of Portugal.
After leaving INSEAD the second time, António Borges became Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs International. He held this post until 2004, when he took up his role as a member of the Champalimaud Foundation’s Board of Directors. In 2010 Prof. Borges was appointed as Director of the IMF’s European Department. On accepting this position he left the Foundation’s Board of Directors to become a member of the General Council
