João Silveira Botelho

Board of Directors

Following a high-profile career in both the public and private sectors, João Silveira Botelho was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Champalimaud Foundation in 2005.

Born in Lisbon, João Botelho graduated with a degree in Law from the University of Lisbon in 1978. During a diverse professional career he has been involved in a number of prominent international ventures. For the first ten years of his high-profile career Mr. Botelho held a number of significant positions within the Portuguese Government. In particular, he was Head of the Cabinet of the Secretary of State for Social Security in the ninth constitutional government (1983-1985), and Head of the Cabinet of the Ministry of Health in the tenth constitutional government (1985-1987). Over the following 20 years Mr. Botelho became a prominent figure in Portuguese and international private enterprise and has held several high-profile positions. He has been an influential figure in the largest Portuguese construction industry, notably as member of the Board of Directors of one of the largest construction and housing projects in Europe; hospital management, as President of the Board of Hospitalia, and tourism as a member of the Board of Directors of the Belver Hotel Group. In addition, he has served on numerous Boards of Directors, many with Hong Kong’s Stanley Ho, with whom he has worked in a number of successful projects involving his financial expertise and work in the biofuel industry. João Botelho is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Champalimaud Foundation, a role he began in 2005.
