Vision

The Champalimaud Foundation is a private organisation based in Portugal and dedicated to supporting the development of research in the medical sciences. Its focus is the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of global illness and disease.

The Foundation believes that in order to improve human health and well-being, scientific discoveries must be translated into practical applications. It is for this reason that the Champalimaud Foundation supports translational research that will drive forward both laboratory based research and clinical practice in Portugal and beyond. Translational research is defined as scientific study that begins in the laboratory before progressing to the clinical arena, or patient’s “bedside”. In particular, priority will be given to research that will contribute to the improvement of the health and well-being of people worldwide, in particular those in developing countries.

Through an active research programme the Champalimaud Foundation intends to stimulate further clinical research, particularly in the non-profit sector. By so doing, the Foundation aims to enhance and consolidate Portugal’s contribution to reducing the global burden of disease and illness.
