The Champalimaud Foundation is seeking to fill a Veterinary Experimental Pathologist position. The selected candidate is expected to manage and define the scientific strategy of the Histopathology platform and to provide histology and comparative pathology support to Champalimaud Foundation Researchers.

The increasing understanding of disease pathophysiology has been posing significant conceptual and technical challenges to experimental pathology. Notably, the use and validation of animal models to study the onset, progression and resolution of disease is an unmet need that also offers a unique opportunity to develop novel toolboxes for histopathology analysis. The appointed Veterinary Experimental Pathologist is expected to explore these novel opportunities and to work in close proximity to the Clinical Pathology service in order to promote technology and scientific synergies.

Primary Services of the Histopathology platform

~Processing, inclusion, sectioning and H&E staining of paraffin embedded samples
~Embedding and sectioning of frozen samples
~Histochemistry
~Immunohistochemistry
~Optical clearing methods
~Macro and micro pathology examination and scoring
~Elaboration of written pathology reports and support images
~Support in experimental design

Qualifications and Skills

~PhD in a relevant scientific field
~Minimum of five years of independent hands-on experience as Veterinary Experimental Pathologist
~Management skills
~Expertise in advanced microscopy methods
~Fluent written and spoken English

About Us

The Champalimaud Foundation (CF) is a private, non-profit organisation, established in 2005 and dedicated to research excellence in biomedical science. Completed in 2010, the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown (CCU) is a state-of-the-art centre for basic and translational research, diagnosis and treatment of diseases from brain disorders to cancer. CF Houses the Champalimaud Clinical Centre (CCC) and the Champalimaud Research (CF Research). CR mostly focus its efforts in the the areas of Physiology, Cancer and Neurosciences. CF provides a unique environment for cutting-edge research. It is now clear that many brain diseases result from malfunctioning of the nervous system together with metabolic changes as well as alterations in the immune and endocrine systems. Likewise, cancer, especially metastatic cancer, involves changes in the tissues where secondary tumours grow and global systemic alterations, as well as compromised host immunity. Therefore, it is of essence to study different systems and how they interact in healthy and diseased organisms, that is, to take an organismic approach to biomedicine.

Champalimaud Research community counts on more than 300 scientists and staff of which 40% are foreign (with representatives from 36 different countries) and of which 54% are female. The Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown (CCU) is located at the beautiful waterfront of Lisbon, Portugal.
