Abstract

Environmental neuroscience explores how brain function and behaviour emerge from continuous interactions between neural systems and the environments in which organisms operate. While neuroscience has traditionally relied on controlled laboratory settings, many of the behaviours studied—decision-making, perception, navigation, and social interaction—unfold in complex real-world contexts.

In this talk I will outline an emerging approach that seeks to integrate environmental context into neuroscience research. The presentation will centre on our experience in the European Horizon 2020 project eMOTIONAL Cities, where we have begun exploring methodological frameworks to study brain–environment interactions in urban settings. By combining neuroscience tools with wearable sensing, environmental monitoring, and geospatial data, these early efforts aim to bridge laboratory neuroscience with real-world environments.

The goal is to share an evolving research direction and open discussion on how environmental context may become a productive dimension for future neuroscience and neurotechnology research.

Bio

Bruno Miranda, is a neurologist and neuroscientist at the Lisbon School of Medicine, University of Lisbon. His current research focuses on environmental neuroscience, investigating how natural and built environments influence brain function, behaviour, as well as physical and mental health. His work integrates neuroscience, physiology, environmental sensing, and spatial analytics to understand how real-world environments shape human cognition and well-being. He is also co-founder of SpikeUrban, where he develops evidence-based approaches to design healthier buildings and cities.
