The agreement between the Champalimaud Foundation and the Einstein Hospital Israelita covers seven areas of collaboration, including clinical, experimental and translational research, particularly in oncology and neuroscience; medical education and doctoral training; continuing professional development; clinical team development; patient safety and quality improvement; the exchange of healthcare technologies and solutions; and institutional ethics, integrity, compliance and governance.
“Science that changes patients’ lives increasingly relies on collaboration and networks. Together with Einstein, we share the ambition of bringing knowledge from the laboratory to the clinic faster, and this agreement gives us the tools to make that happen together, on both sides of the Atlantic” said Leonor Beleza, President of the Champalimaud Foundation.
Signed by Leonor Beleza and Henrique Neves, Director-General of the Einstein Hospital Israelita, the agreement follows a series of scientific meetings coordinated by Luiz Vicente Rizzo, Einstein’s Director of Research, and António Coutinho, representing the Champalimaud Foundation. These discussions identified four initial areas for collaboration: immunotherapy and immunodiagnostics, theranostics, multi-omics and cell therapy.
For Henrique Neves, strengthening international scientific partnerships is essential to advancing medicine and expanding the contribution of Brazilian researchers to global research. “Addressing the major challenges in medicine requires scientific excellence, a long-term vision and connections that transcend borders. Einstein aims to play an increasingly significant role in this landscape by bringing together leading organisations in Brazil and around the world to tackle major healthcare challenges. Our experience in cutting-edge fields allows us to expand opportunities for Brazilian researchers to lead studies with global reach and play an increasingly active role in shaping the advances that will transform medicine over the coming decades,” he said.
The second agreement signed in Lisbon establishes a framework for future cooperation between the Champalimaud Foundation and FAPESP. Planned initiatives include joint seminars, workshops and symposia, researcher exchanges and the development of a dual-degree programme. The specific terms of the cooperation, including funding arrangements, will be defined in a future agreement.
Together, the two initiatives strengthen scientific connections between Portugal and Brazil, creating opportunities to share expertise, foster researcher mobility and advance collaborative research in areas with the potential to shape the future of healthcare.
