Chosen from over 200 applicants across Europe and associated countries, Veiga-Fernandes was one of just 32 scientists ultimately appointed as ERC Ambassadors. The final selection aimed to balance gender, seniority, and the representation of both current ERC grant holders and different countries. The 32 ambassadors represent 21 EU Member States and four Associated Countries – Israel, Norway, Turkey, and the United Kingdom – plus Switzerland.
One of Portugal’s most highly awarded scientists for his work on the immune system, Veiga-Fernandes will join a network of researchers tasked with championing the value of frontier research in Europe. ERC Ambassadors play a voluntary yet vital role: engaging with national and regional communities, sharing insights from their experience with ERC funding, supporting local research ecosystems, and promoting the power of fundamental science to the public, policymakers, and the media.
“The ERC is the single most transformative and prestigious initiative currently shaping the scientific landscape in Europe”, said Veiga-Fernandes. “Serving as an ERC ambassador is both a profound joy and privilege, representing Portugal on the international scientific stage”.
Reflecting on the broader significance of the role, Veiga-Fernandes added:
“The crucial role of science in knowledge-based societies is increasingly under threat in contemporary times. It is imperative to harness the transformative power of science and amplify the voices of scientists to the public and decision-makers. By doing so, the values inherent in science-based knowledge can greatly benefit society, the environment, and human well-being”.
