Biography
Non-executive member of the Board of Director of the Champalimaud Foundation
António Horta-Osório was appointed a member of the Champalimaud Foundation's Board of Directors in 2010.
Currently he also serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the pharmaceutical company BIAL, Deputy Chairman of Credit Commercial de France (CCF) and as Non-Executive director at “José de Mello Capital, SA”, Velo bank in Poland and at Stiching/Enable INPAR.
He is also a Senior Advisor to “Cerberus”, “Mediobanca”, “Teya”, “McKinsey” and to "Precision Capital". Previously, António Horta-Osório has been Chairman of Credit Suisse Group from May 2021 till January 2022.
Before that, he was the Group Chief Executive of Lloyds Banking Group, to which he was appointed in 2011 at the invitation of the British Government and led for 10 years, having successfully turned around the bank and returned taxpayers’ money in full in 2017. Before joining Lloyds, he held various management functions at Grupo Santander from 1993 to 2010, in particular as Chief Executive Officer in Portugal, Brazil and the UK, where he turned around Abbey National, acquired Alliance and Leiscester and Bradford and Bingley during the Great Financial Crisis and merged them into Santander Uk in 2010. Previously he also worked for Goldman Sachs and for Citibank between 1987 and 1993 and was also an Assistant Professor at Portuguese Catholic University from 1984 to 1996, teaching several subjects from Econometrics to Applied Corporate Finance.
Furthermore, he served on the Court of Directors of the Bank of England from 2009 to 2011 in a personal capacity, and has been the Chairman of the Wallace Collection, a Prime Minister’s appointment from January 2015 to December 2021.
António Horta-Osório holds a degree in management and business administration from the Portuguese Catholic University in Lisbon, as well as an MBA from INSEAD, and an Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business School. He has been awarded Honorary Doctorates by the University of Edinburgh, the University of Bath, the University of Warwick, the University of Birmingham and by Portuguese Catholic University.
