Rui Costa, PhD, DVM, is a neuroscientist and President and CEO of the Allen Institute. His focus has been on understanding brain mechanisms that underly movement and learning. After PhD studies at UCLA/University of Porto and postdoctoral work at Duke University, he became a Section Chief at the National Institutes of Health. In 2009, Dr. Costa became an Investigator of the Champalimaud Neuroscience Program, serving as Deputy Director and then as co- Director of Champalimaud Research from 2014 to 2017. From 2017 to 2022, Costa was CEO of the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute at Columbia University in New York. Dr. Costa has received several honors such as Commander of the Order of Sant'Iago da Espada, the Ariëns Kappers Medal from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and is an elected member of the European Molecular Biology Organization and the National Academy of Medicine.
