Spatial Tumor Pathology

About

Bagci Lab

The spatial pathology of the pancreas is a critical field that delves into the intricate distribution and arrangement of pathological alterations within pancreatic tissues. This approach goes beyond simple histopathological examination by considering the spatial organization of disease features across different regions of the organ, providing a more comprehensive understanding of pancreatic disorders. Diseases such as pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatitis present distinct spatial characteristics that can offer insights into their pathogenesis and progression.

In pancreatic cancer, spatial pathology uncovers tumor heterogeneity, the complex architecture of the tumor microenvironment, and the role of stromal elements, such as fibroblasts and immune cells, which support or hinder tumor growth. The study also identifies tumor vascularization patterns, which are crucial for understanding how cancer cells access nutrients and metastasize. Furthermore, the proximity of tumors to surrounding tissues, including blood vessels and ducts, can have significant implications for tumor behavior and response to treatment.

Advanced imaging technologies, spatial transcriptomics, and three-dimensional tissue reconstructions are increasingly used to map these pathological changes in fine detail. These techniques enable researchers and clinicians to visualize the precise location of disease features at high resolution, which enhances diagnostic accuracy, guides therapeutic decisions, and supports the development of personalized treatment strategies for pancreatic disorders.

The aim of spatial pathology of the pancreas is to understand the distribution, organization, and interaction of pathological changes within pancreatic tissues in various diseases. Ultimately, the goal of this lab is to provide a detailed, spatially aware understanding of pancreatic diseases to advance diagnostics, treatment options, and overall patient care.
