With a career spanning leadership of some of Europe’s most influential biomedical research institutions, Otmar Wiestler joins the Champalimaud Foundation as Director of Champalimaud Science. An internationally recognised physician-scientist and research leader, he has played a central role in shaping large-scale scientific organisations, most notably as President of the Helmholtz Association and, prior to that, as Chairman and CEO of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ).

The Vision Award Office is where ideas are shaped into global recognition.

It is here that the António Champalimaud Vision Award takes form, through careful preparation, collaboration and informed decision-making.

It is also home to the Ethics Committee, where research projects, in particular clinical studies, are supported and rigorously reviewed.

Under the central theme of efficiency as a condition for a more sustainable, equitable and future-ready healthcare system, the event established itself as a forum for discussing concrete solutions, with proposals for more efficient use of public investment, improved incentives for professionals and patient-centred policies.

Caring for patients is one of the Champalimaud Foundation’s core purposes, and the Radiotherapy Service supports that mission every day. 

In a highly controlled environment, precise doses of radiation are targeted to treat different types of cancer. 

Behind this precision is a dedicated team of specialised doctors, physicists, nurses and technicians, working together to ensure each treatment is both safe and effective.

Every detail matters. Every decision is guided by expertise, responsibility and care.

Researchers at the Champalimaud Foundation, in Lisbon, have for the first time managed to identify, with an imaging technique, whether nervous impulses in the brain of rats are flowing in a “bottom-up” (feedforward), carrying information about visual input, or a “top-down” (feedback) direction, carrying information about expectations or predictions on a given task or about the perception of the world around us.

Driven by a fascination for science, behaviour and biology –  and shaped by his social environment – Marcelo Mendonça’s path to medicine stems from curiosity and was galvanized by a single, transformative clinical moment. 

The symposium will bring together national and international experts to explore the dynamic evolution of the field, with a special focus on the close collaboration between radiology and surgery.

Diagnostic and interventional radiology are currently undergoing remarkable transformation. New imaging methodologies are redefining precision and diagnostic capability, achieving unprecedented levels of accuracy and clinical impact. Innovations such as photon-counting CT technology and ultra-fast MRI protocols are rapidly expanding the horizons of medical imaging.

This was the starting point for RTP’s programme Hora de Agir, which dedicated one of its episodes to carbon neutrality in healthcare, highlighting the path the Champalimaud Foundation is taking to become the first healthcare institution in the world to operate on 100% clean energy. The programme featured João Silveira Botelho, Vice-President of the Champalimaud Foundation, who stressed the urgency of transforming how healthcare consumes energy and resources.
